(High-School Version) Path to Finding God: Genesis 1:1 - The Foundation of Reality and the Invitation to Relationship

Psalm 145:18, “The Lord is close to those who sincerely call on Him.”

Opening Hook: The Ultimate Question

Okay, let's be real. Have you ever looked up at the night sky and just… wondered? Wondered where it all came from? What's the point of it all? We're talking about the BIG questions. Like, the biggest question of all: is there more to reality than what we can see, touch, and measure?

Think about it: science is all about asking 'Why?' and 'How?'. But what if the ultimate 'Why?' leads us to something beyond already verified by what we can test in a lab? What if the very foundation of everything – the universe, time, even space itself – points to something… or Someone… bigger than we can imagine?

We're going to dive into that today, and we're starting at the very beginning. Forget the textbooks for a minute, we will get back to them under critical analysis. We're going to challenge some assumptions, explore some mind-bending ideas, and maybe, just maybe, discover a whole new way of looking at the world. We're talking about faith, science, and the ultimate search for meaning.

Ready to explore the possibility that the answer to everything might just be found in a single, powerful sentence? Let's “begin” with Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The idea of cause and effect is key to how we understand the world. As Dr. Michael A. Scordato (Ph.D.) once said, "Causation is necessary for capability proven through a scientific lens. And that causation at times can be God." This means that science and faith don't have to be enemies. If God is the ultimate cause behind everything, then miracles, or things that seem to break the laws of nature, become scientifically possible. As Dr. Scordato also pointed out, "Miracles are only possible scientifically if there is One (capital Deity “O”) or a Cause capable of empowering that miracle to occur." These ideas open up the door to scientific investigation, allowing us to explore all kinds of possibilities.

In considering the question of origins, the Bible, particularly the book of Genesis, provides a unique perspective. While other ideas like aliens, other gods, or the idea of nature as the source of all things exist, the Bible's account has stood up to rigorous testing and scrutiny. This doesn't mean the Bible is just a science book, but it does offer profound insights into how the universe works.

Many great thinkers have explored the relationship between the science of faith. Albert Einstein saw the wonder of existence as a philosophical perspective on miracles, while C.S. Lewis defined miracles as specific acts of God that work within the natural world. He believed these acts show God's power and love.

Now, let's look at the very first verse of the Bible: Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." This simple phrase is packed with meaning, offering a foundation for understanding the universe and our place in it. It tells us that God exists and that all of creation points to His existence (Romans 1:20).

Breaking Down Genesis 1:1

This verse can be understood in terms of three key elements:

"In the beginning" - The Creation of Time: This introduces the idea of time itself. Before this "beginning," there was no measurable time. This suggests that time isn't something that has always existed but was created by God.

"God created the heavens" - The Creation of Space: The "heavens" represent the vastness of space. God created the space in which all physical things would exist. Like time, space is not eternal but was created.

"And the earth" - The Creation of Matter: "The earth" refers to the physical matter of the universe. God created the tangible things we can see and touch.

This order—time, space, then matter—is important. It shows that God established the framework (time), then the arena (space), and finally the substance (matter). This demonstrates God's orderliness and intelligence, reflecting the truth that "God is not the author of confusion but of peace" (1 Corinthians 14:33).

Beyond the Physical

Genesis 1:1 points to something beyond just the physical world. It implies the existence of things outside of time, space, and matter. This is where the concept of God, the ultimate origin, becomes critical. Things like logic, mathematics, and the human mind are eternal and not limited by the physical universe. God, then, is the ultimate reality, the source of everything.

God's Uniqueness

The Bible consistently emphasizes that God is unique and supreme. Isaiah 44:8 proclaims, "Do not tremble, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one." This and other verses highlight God's singular nature.

The Purpose of Creation and the Invitation

The creation story isn't just about how the universe began; it's also about relationship. God created humans with free will so they could have a relationship with Him. Although this relationship was broken by sin (Genesis 3), God offers a path back through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Jesus's death on the cross pays for our sins, offering us a chance to be reconciled with God.

The Bible's message is clear: God wants everyone to be saved and to know the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). Verses like 2 Peter 3:9 and John 3:16 show God's love and desire for us to have eternal life. This offer of salvation is open to all, but it requires a personal choice to believe in Jesus (John 1:12).

Evidence for God's Existence

The complexity and order of the universe point to a Creator. As Romans 1:20 says, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse." The intricate design of the human body, the precision of biological processes, and the finely-tuned constants of the universe all suggest an intelligent designer.

Even Albert Einstein, a brilliant scientist, acknowledged the order and harmony of the cosmos. While he didn't believe in a personal God, he recognized a divine order. He said that he believed in a God who reveals Himself through the order of the universe, not one who gets involved in human affairs, which is quite sad being that God said He will reveal and help with us through life if we turn to and ask Him.

The Open Invitation

God is not distant. The Bible encourages a personal relationship with Him. In Acts 17:27, Paul said that God wants people "to seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us." God wants to be known and is accessible to those who seek Him. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." This invitation is repeated throughout Scripture (Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 7:7, John 14:15-17). Part of the scientific "testing" of God is seeking Him directly.

Conclusion

Genesis 1:1 is more than just a historical account; it's a foundation for understanding reality. It presents a worldview where God is the ultimate Creator of time, space, and matter. This offers a logical explanation for the universe, the order we see, and the purpose of human existence. It's an open invitation to explore a relationship with God, an invitation available to anyone who seeks Him with a sincere heart. The journey of faith begins with this profound truth, and the path to understanding and relationship is open to all.

Closing Challenge: Embracing the Light

We've explored the idea that science and faith, particularly the concept of intelligent design, might not be at odds. In fact, causation, the driving force behind all observable phenomena, may be a pathway to understanding God. While modern science often prioritizes the views of those in high positions, empirical evidence, when examined honestly, points towards an intelligent design. However, the true resistance comes not from the evidence, but from the deliberate misinterpretations of pseudo-scientists and even A.I. systems programmed to reject the very possibility of intelligent design. These systems are often pre-programmed to reject the potential existence of a Creator due to the programmer's religious viewpoints of striking to reject the potential existence for an accountable God.

So why the resistance? As John 3:19-20 reminds us, “19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed."

Consider the invitation to a personal relationship with God, as presented in this essay. Why is this invitation so crucial? What are the potential rewards, and what are the challenges of such a relationship? How does this invitation transform our understanding of life's purpose?

Imagine you are a scientist studying the universe's origins. How would you integrate these ideas, or choose not to? What new questions would you pursue? What are the ethical consequences of believing in a Creator who desires a relationship with His Creation?

Ultimately, what arguments do you have against the overwhelming evidence of intelligent design? Is it simply a matter of religious bias, a reluctance to embrace an unpopular idea, or a fear of the accountability that comes with the notion of God and the invitation to relationship?

Battling Objections And Wrestling With Truth

We've explored the foundation of reality in Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," and examined its implications. But it's time to address the pushback – the questions and doubts that naturally arise.

Objection 1: The Uncaused Cause

The Doubt: If everything has a cause, what caused God? This challenges the very idea of a Creator.

The Answer: God is the cause of Himself. He is the beginning. Genesis 1:1 implies that the universe, with its beginning (as science confirms), needs a cause. God, however, is eternal, self-existent, and not subject to the same rules as His creation. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 1:8). God is the ultimate First Cause, causing Himself to exist as all things that was came together and is Him….the Necessary Being. The universe, being contingent, meaning it could have been different or not existed at all, demands an explanation, and that explanation is God. God is the beginning, and as Isaiah 44:6 states, "I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God." Before time, space, and matter, was God and His mind as all time happened at one time- since He created time itself.

Objection 2: The Problem of Evil

The Doubt: If God is all-powerful and all-good, why does evil exist? Suffering, pain, and injustice seem to contradict a loving Creator.

The Answer: This goes to the heart of free will and the relationship God desires. God allowed free will, and sin and evil in the result of choices made by free-willed creatures (Genesis 3). This doesn't absolve God of responsibility for allowing evil, but it explains the existence of evil without compromising God's goodness. John 8:44 identifies Satan as the "father of lies," the originator of evil.

Creation was declared "very good" (Genesis 1:31) before evil entered the world. God's involvement continues, as Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God "has made everything beautiful in its time." We receive "every good gift" from Him (James 1:17). Romans 8:28 assures us that He works all things together for good to those who love Him. 1 Timothy 4:4 states that "everything created by God is good" when received with a thankful heart. The question isn't "Why do bad things happen to good people?" but "Why does God do anything good for us imperfect bad people?"

God allows us to choose Him freely, not as robots. We are part of the "Bride of God” (Old Testament) and "Bride of Christ" (New Testament). We must choose to enter a relationship with Him, and it is in this environment that Christ romances us, creating and offering the opportunity to respond "yes" or "no" to His call.

Evil entered through the choices of free beings, such as Satan (John 8:44), who fell due to pride (Isaiah 14:12-14, Ezekiel 28:12-18, Luke 10:18, Revelations 12:4-9). The Book of Job shows Satan's hatred towards men, while Hebrews 2:7 and Psalm 8:4-6 show man’s status. Hebrews 2:9 states that after Jesus "suffered death," He was "crowned with glory and honor." We will judge the angels! (Hebrews 2:5-8, 1 Corinthians 6:3, Matthew 19:28 and Revelation 20:4)

Objection 3: Science vs. Genesis?

The Doubt: The Genesis account seems to clash with scientific findings like the age of the Earth, evolution, and the Big Bang.

The Answer: The Genesis account is a scientifically supported theological account that conveys truths about God’s nature, creative power, and the relationship between God and humanity. The pseudo-scientific models, like the “Big Bang theory,” are still just theories…actually are scientifically already disproven theories clung to since still wanting a way somehow still reject a relationship with God. Like Satan these people are seen fallen to their own pride into a very weak lacking science religious blind-faith position.

"The Big Bang" has issues when looking at the physics in the universe, such as the spin and the fact that explosions destroy, not create. The pseudo-science of the ‘long ages’ is a religious faith-based belief system, striving to form a way of worshiping nature as creation god. Long ages is a popular belief, but has long been scientifically disproven by basic common sense, let alone advanced science testing. For example, the helium release rates from basalt lava flows (many claim millions of years old) actually show a reliable 6,000-year age, and how we find blood in dinosaur bones, showing their youth far below the long ages put on them from scientist ignoring the weathering on fossils being in an outdoor environment for thousands of years. The essay's focus on time, space, and matter, can be seen as harmonizing the scientific reality with a theological viewpoint, understanding the "heavens and the earth" as God's creation. The long ages and explosions to create are simply religious view points from a nature religion striving to make a mindless nature itself into God, instead of letting God with His mind sit on creation’s throne.

Objection 4: Where's the Proof?

The Doubt: The existence of God is a matter of faith, not provable facts.

The Answer: While faith is essential, the essay does invoke the scientific method. The essay argues that the order and complexity of the universe do provide evidence for an intelligent designer. The appeal to the fine-tuning of the universe (the precise values of physical constants that allow life) not just suggests, but show the need of an intelligent cause. Moreover, the essay uses logical arguments to make its case as well as historical and philosophical arguments. A painting has a painter, a building has a builder. Would you not say I was a fool to tell you that this computer I am typing on created itself, had no creator?

Commonsense overridden by popular peer pressure faith base religious belief is all that the Evolution Nature religion is. As Romans 1:20 states, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse." The existence of God is a matter of faith through empirical evidence, not absence of it. Therefore it is based on, concerned verifiable observation and experience rather than theory or pure logic, the arguments in the essay are based on belief, and provable facts. Throwing dynamite into a junkyard does not build sports cars. Someone has to come in with a mind to build something from the junk present there. See, I am not insane…but from what you state therefore are you? Ponder this thought.

Objection 5: What About Other Religions?

The Doubt: Christianity claims to be the only true path. What about other faiths?

The Answer: The essay presents the Christian perspective but doesn't dismiss that other religions may have some truth in them. The essay's emphasis on proof of Intelligent design is followed by found relationship with God. The essay's goal is to present a specific truth, and it is the task of the individual to investigate and decide which path to follow. God says He will respond if you reach out to Him. I challenge you to seriously ask Him directly who He is. Proverbs 23:23 plus John 14:6 is the answer. He is the truth, seek truth and you will always find Him.

Objection 6: The Problem of Interpretation

The Doubt: Genesis 1:1 can be interpreted in many ways. Why should we accept this specific view?

The Answer: The essay acknowledges that interpretation is necessary. The essay's interpretation is based on a specific understanding of the text. It uses the text to build its arguments. The essay's focus on the sequential creation of time, space, and matter is a valid interpretation that, when combined with the other arguments, builds a compelling case. We cannot imagine away the connection to time, space, and matter presented directly here. All that you can do is expand on it even further.

Objection 7: It's Not Popular!

The Doubt: This is a hard path, and not the one everyone is on. I will have to resist the world!

The Answer: It may not be easy, but know that God made you as an overcomer, a truth seeker who can find truth and live in it. Proof? Overcoming Bible Verses:

1 John 5:4, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith." We believe in the power of faith to overcome adversity.

1 John 4:4, You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." We remind ourselves of the strength within, empowered by God.

Romans 8:37, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." We affirm our ability to triumph over challenges.

Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." We encourage ourselves to respond to injustice with love and compassion.

2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." We accept that God’s Ephesians 6:10-18 prayer applied armor and power provide’s a foundation of courage, love, and clarity with a sound mind meaning a promise of no mental disorder.

Here, you are not alone. You are loved, valued, and embraced as part of our family. Support, Participate, Give, and Help as you move from inaction toward action in your life. Amen.

The Concluding Enduring Echoes of Genesis 1:1

The opening words of Scripture, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” are not just a historical account; they are a declaration with profound implications that reverberate through all of existence and into our lives today.

Scientific Implications: The very act of creation, as revealed in Genesis 1:1, points to an Intelligent Designer. This means that scientific inquiry itself is grounded in a logical and ordered reality. Because God is a God of order, we can trust in the laws of nature, and we can pursue scientific endeavors with confidence, knowing that we are exploring a creation that reflects the mind of God.

Historical Implications: Genesis 1:1 provides the foundation for all history. It affirms that there is a beginning, a point of origin. This beginning is not random or chaotic but purposeful, with God as the source. It links us to a Creator who transcends time, yet is intimately involved in His creation. This connection allows us to understand the past, learn from it, and anticipate a future that is rooted in God's promises.

Ethical Implications: If God is the Creator, then we are His creation. We are created in His image (Genesis 1:27), giving us inherent dignity and value. This understanding shapes our ethics, our sense of right and wrong. It provides a moral compass that guides us toward a greater purpose: to love God and to love our neighbor. Our existence is not accidental; we are here for a reason, and that reason is to glorify and serve Him.

The Ultimate Assurance: But perhaps the most profound implication of Genesis 1:1 is the assurance it provides. We know that we are held in the hands of the Almighty God. Jesus tells us in John 10:28-29 "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand." There is nothing more powerful that could ever take us from His care. This truth gives us peace in the storm, hope in the face of despair, and unwavering confidence in the eternal love and protection of our Creator.

Let us, therefore, embrace the reality of Genesis 1:1, and live each day in the light of its eternal implications.
